Glasgow in Scotland hosts this year's huge multi-discipline combined event and provides the climax to both road races and the mixed relay, with the individual time trial starting and finishing in nearby Stirling.

UCI Cycling World Championships 2023: How to watch live coverage on the BBC

The first combined UCI Cycling World Championships take place in Scotland from 3-13 August - and all the action will be shown live across the BBC.

Over 11 days of competition, 13 World Championships will be contested across seven disciplines, with Para-cycling fully integrated for the first time.

About 2,700 cyclists will compete for more than 200 gold medals.

Track, road, mountain bikes and BMX are included, and there are mass-participation events for amateurs.

What are the Cycling World Championships?

While all disciplines have their own annual championships, the UCI - cycling's world governing body - plans to use this format every four years, in pre-Olympic years, to create a "festival of cycling".

Racing will take place across Scotland, from the downhill mountain biking in Fort William to the Para-road cycling in Dumfries and Galloway, with Glasgow at the centre.

The opening ceremony will take place at Glasgow's George Square on Wednesday from 17:00-20:00 BST.

The first gold medals will be awarded in the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome on Thursday in the track and Para-cycling track disciplines.

Eritrean history maker Biniam Girmay is out of the Cycling World Championships in Scotland because of injury.

The 23-year-old was hoping to become Africa's first world champion in Sunday's men's road race after last year becoming the first black African to win a Grand Tour stage.

However, his Intermarche Circus Wanty team said he would not be able to race as he was recovering from a crash.

"I'm of course very disappointed to withdraw," Girmay said.

He said the event had been "a main goal for this season" but the injuries suffered in a crash at last weekend's Clasica San Sebastian "caused too severe pain to be able to defend my chances in the Worlds".

Biniam Girmay is leading a revolution in cycling

The 60km/h crash had left Girmay suffering "from contusions and pain in the hip", his team said.

"My priority is now to recover from this crash and then the preparation for the last part of the season," Girmay added.

Girmay won silver in the under-23 men's race at the 2021 World Championships. The following year he made his Grand Tour debut at the Giro d'Italia, winning stage 10 for his history-making moment.

News of his withdrawal came hours after reports claimed Girmay and three of his Eritrean team-mates had been refused entry to the UK for the World Championships.

Global Cycling Network said the four had been denied visas to enter the country. One of the riders, Merhawi Kudus, retweeted a link to the story, writing "Sad!!" and tagging world governing body the UCI and event organisers.

The secretary-general of the Eritrean Cycling Federation, Misghina Haile, told BBC Tigrinya that no Eritrean cyclist had been denied a visa - with some who had applied still awaiting a decision.

Eritrean cyclist Natnael Berhane told the BBC he and two others had been granted visas.
